Students blocked the Farmgate intersection in the capital on Thursday to realise their five-point demand, which include ensuring safer roads and justice for a victim of Farmgate's recent road accident.

The protest, held mostly by the students of Govt. Science College in Tejgaon -- follows the death of a young man named Sifat, who was killed in a truck accident in the Farmgate area two days ago.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Ibne Mizan said the protesting students occupied the Farmgate intersection and halted traffic around 12 pm.

A case has been filed over the truck accident that killed Sifat and efforts are underway to apprehend the accused.

The protesting students also called for clearing illegal shops, temporary structures, unauthorised markets and street dwellers from the footpaths.

They also urged strict enforcement of "No Parking" zones; restriction of auto-rickshaws, trucks and other heavy vehicles from the railway crossing to church area; and installation of three speed breakers near educational institutions along with adequate lamp posts, lane dividers, and traffic islands.

Students left the area following discussions with the authorities concerned.
