April 11, 2018 00:00:00

Students from different educational institutions continued on Tuesday demonstrations for reform in job quota system across the country, reports agencies.

In Jahangirnagar University, atudents of Jahangirnagar University boycotted on Tuesday all classes and examinations protesting police attack on the fellow students on Monday.

They also demanded punishment of the policemen who attacked the students during the demonstration demanding reform of the existing quota system in the civil service.

The decision of boycotting classes and examinations was taken at an emergency meeting of the executive body of Bangladesh General Students' Rights Protection Forum on Monday night, said Armanul Islam Khan, convener of student forum.

Earlier on Monday, at least 60 students were injured as police swung into action to disperse university students and job seekers staging demonstrations on Dhaka-Aricha highway demanding reform of the existing quota system in government services.

The agitating students brought out a protest procession in front of the central library on Tuesday at 9:30am.

They also declared Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury as 'unwanted' on the JU campus until she withdraws her comments that she made on Monday night in parliament and questioned the role of media.

They also demanded an apology from her.

At Monday's session at National Parliament, Matia Chowdhury termed the protesters as the children of war criminals.

JU Vice-chancellor Prof Farzana Islam has extended her support to the demand of students.

Meanwhile, JU teachers association in a press release condemned the police attack and also demanded immediate punishment to the cops who were involved in the attack.

Meanwhile, in Rajshahi University, students for the third consecutive day continued demonstration on the campus demanding reforms of the existing quota system in government recruitment tests, including BCS examinations.

Several hundred protesters brought out a procession in front of the central library around 11:45am and paraded different roads on the campus chanting slogans.

Besides, the students of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) held a rally on Dhaka-Natore highway to press home their demand.

When they tried to take position on the road, police dispersed them, foiling their attempt to block the highway.

Earlier, the protesters postponed their movement until May 7 following the assurance from the government to bring 'logical reform' in the existing quota system.

Meanwhile, a group of protesters turned down the decision and vowed to continue it until their demands are met.

On February 17, students and job seekers started the movement to press for their five-point demand that include introduction of unified age limit in government jobs, review of quota system in government recruitment process, including Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination, stopping taking benefit by job seekers under the same quota, filling vacant posts from merit list if the candidates from quota are not found and fixation of 10 per cent quota instead of existing 56 per cent.
