Supply disruption pushes prices of vegetables, chicken, onion up

Prices of vegetables, chicken and onions increased in the city markets, which traders attributed to supply disruptions due to the 13th national election and referendum.

Although vehicles carrying essential goods were officially exempted, the supply of products, including the essential items, declined in the markets.

Visits to Mohammadpur, Adabar and Segunbagicha markets in the capital revealed that most of the vegetables were selling at Tk 10 to Tk 20 per kg higher on Friday compared to their prices before the February 12 election.

Abdul Haque, a vendor at Adabar market, said supply of vegetables remains low and the customers' turnout in the market is also comparatively less.

He said due to the election, the number of customers fell considerably in the markets.

A vendor at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, Najmul Islam, also said lower than the normal quantity of vegetables arrived at Karwan Bazar on Thursday night.

As a result, he could not buy cucumber, green peas, cauliflower and cabbage, and those items were not available in his shop.

He said vegetables such as brinjal, ridge gourd, cucumber, okra, snake gourd, cabbage and cauliflower cannot be stored for more than one or two days.

Cucumbers were sold at Tk 80-100 per kg and tomatoes at Tk 60-70 per kg, up by Tk 10-20.

Green chilli prices increased by Tk 40-50 a kg as was sold at Tk 200-220 a kg.

Local beans, radish and papaya were sold at Tk 50-60 per kg, depending on the quality, while brinjal was priced at Tk 70-90 per kg.

Bitter gourd and green peas are selling at Tk 160-200 per kg.

Meanwhile, the onion prices rose by Tk 10 per kg to Tk 60-70 a kg in the last couple of days.

On the other hand, prices of broiler chicken also rose by Tk 20 per kg to Tk 200-210 per kg on Friday. Pakistani and Sonali chicken were selling at Tk 320-340 per kg.
