'Tanvir kills self after failing to get govt job'

April 02, 2018 00:00:00

Tanvir Rahman who committed suicide apparently out of depression on the Dhaka University (DU) campus had long been seeking a government job, reports bdnews24.com.

Before his death, Tanvir shared his frustration with his relatives over the corrupt practices surrounding government jobs, his family said.

The 31-year-old was a son of a freedom fighter, but that did not bring him any government job, according to his family.

"Tanvir had been trying for government jobs for the last four years. He used to talk about corrupt practices prevailing in the sector and how people bribe their way into government jobs," said his aunt Meherunnesa.

"He was devastated as he could not secure a government job despite being a freedom fighter's son," Meherunnesa told the news agency.

Son of Fasiur Rahman and Kamrunnesa, Tanvir lived with his relatives in the Sheorapara neighbourhood in Dhaka.

A native of Brahmanbaria said, Tanvir passed the HSC exam from BAF Shaheen College in 2005 and graduated with a degree in business administration from Darul Ihsan University.

He signed up for MBA courses at the accounting and information system department at DU in 2014.

His body was found next to a building of the Business Studies Faculty on the DU campus on Saturday.

He was pronounced dead around 9:00 pm after being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital or DMCH.

Meherunnesa said Tanvir secured a job at Biman Bangladesh Airlines recently but the appointment procedure was stopped over some corruption allegations.

"Three days back, Tanvir started working as a merchandiser at a garment factory in Uttara. One of his father's friends owned the business but Tanvir was not happy with the work," Meherunnesa said.

Tanvir jumped from the rooftop of the nine-storey building on Saturday, Shahbagh Police Station Inspector Zafar Ali Biswas said.
