Tk 218 billion human resources lost, as 7,294 killed: RSF

Human resources worth Tk 218 billion were lost, as 7,294 people were killed in road accidents in the country in 2024, according to a report of the Road Safety Foundation (RSF), disseminated on Wednesday.

Last year, a total of 6,927 road accidents took place in the country, which killed 7,294 people and injured 12,019 others. Of the dead, 893 were women (12.24 per cent), and 1,152 were children (15.79 per cent).

Of the total fatalities in 2024, 2,609 people were killed in 2,761 motorcycle accidents, which was 35.76 per cent of the total deaths.

The number of pedestrians killed in accidents was 1,535, which was 21.04 per cent of the total deaths. Besides, 984 vehicle drivers and assistants were killed, the RSF report added.

In 2024, 152 people were killed, 161 were injured and 39 went missing in 118 boat accidents. Besides, 324 people were killed and 277 were injured in 347 railway accidents.

The RSF prepared the report based on nine national dailies, seven online news portals, electronic media, and its own data.

The organisation's observation and analysis mentioned that 34 per cent of the accidents occurred on the national highways, 39.49 per cent on regional roads, 14 per cent on rural roads, and 11.31 per cent on city roads.

In 2024, the highest number of accidents and fatalities occurred in Dhaka division, where 1,840 people were killed in 1,582 accidents. Sylhet division had the lowest number of accidents with 435 accidents, killing 443 people.

In the capital, 246 people were killed and 482 were injured in 394 road accidents.
