ACC drive against graft on

Tk180m embezzled in name of medical equipment purchase

FE Report | April 25, 2019 00:00:00

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday, in an enforcement drive, found massive irregularities in medical equipment procurement for Satkhira Sadar Hospital.

In primary investigation, the commission came to know that the hospital authority issued a tender notice during 2017-18 fiscal to collect heavy medical equipment worth Tk 180 million.

But the sum of money was embezzled by a vested quarter through issuing a written approval letter before receiving the equipment mentioned in the tender notice.

The ACC team from its integrated district office (IDO) in Khulna that conducted the drive found involvement of the hospital storekeeper AK Fazlul Haque in the embezzlement process.

However, sensing the presence of the ACC team, Mr Haque fled the spot locking the hospital store, said ACC public relations official Pranab Bhattacharjee.

In a separate drive, an ACC team found graft evidences in open market sale (OMS) programme for poor people at Tejgaon central storage depot (CSD).

Scrutinising close circuit television (CCTv) footage at the entrance of the CSD, the ACC team observed that a total of 52 trucks entered the premises of CSD to load sacks of flour for OMS programme.

But only 25 trucks were weighted on the weighing scale before leaving the CSD which is an indication of potential graft in the food depot.

Following the revelation, the CSD authority issued a show cause notice to food inspector, inspector (check post) and two security guards in this regard.

In a drive at the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation, the commission found that the corporation has created over 300 posts for its administration without approval of the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry.

The ACC has gathered documents in this regard for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the commission during two other drives found irregularities in Divisional Passport and Visa Office in Barishal and in assistant commissioner (AC-Land) office at Bhojeshwar union in Naria upazila of Shariatpur district.

The separate ACC teams have noted allegations and collected evidence of irregularities at the Barishal passport office and received a set of graft complaints against the AC land of Bhojeshwar union.
