RAJSHAHI, Aug 25: Leaders of Sarak Paribahan Shramik Federation, Rajshahi region, will go for an indefinite transport strike in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions from September 04, demanding transfer of the case filed against truck driver Shahjahan Ali under section 302 of the penal code to section 304.

They took the decision at an emergency meeting at a restaurant in Natore on Sunday.

Truck driver Shahjahan Ali was arrested in a case filed against him under section 302 of the penal code following a road accident in Mymensingh, which killed police constable Robi Chowdhury.

The leaders of the federations, a platform of 28 transport organisations of Rajshahi division, said on August 17, police constable Robi Chowdhury was killed under the wheels of a truck carrying goods in Mymensingh.

The highway police arrested driver Shahjahan Ali from Natore in connection with the incident and filed a murder case against him under section 302, they said.

They claimed usually such a case is filed under section 304( kha).

But police filed the case under section 302 which they called motivated.

Ansar Ali, general secretary of Rajshahi Regional Transport committee, said transport leaders have already discussed the issue with Superintendent of Police in Mymensingh and other transport leaders and owners.

They will go for countrywide transport strike if their demand is not met, he said.

Abdul Mannan, vice-president of Rajshahi Regional Poribahan Shramik Federation, Rafiqul Islam, Abdul Mannan Mondal, Feroze Khan, Dhahidullah Sheikh, President of Natore district truck and tank lorry Shramik Union Mostarul Islam Alam, among others, attended the meeting.
