A Dhaka court on Tuesday issued travel bans against Shariful Islam Jinnah, a former Member of Parliament (MP) of Bogura-2 from the Jatiya Party, and Kabir Bin Anwar, a former cabinet secretary, in connection with corruption allegations against them.
The court has also imposed a travel ban on Kabir Bin Anwar's wife, Taufika Ahmed.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge As-Sams Jaglul Hossain issued the orders in response to separate petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
An investigation is currently underway regarding accusations that Jinnah embezzled a substantial amount of money through illegal means, according to the ACC sources.
On 2 February, 2021, the ACC had filed a case against him for submitting false asset statements worth Tk 6.9 million and failing to account for Tk 16 million of his income.
The ACC sources also said Jinnah might flee the country, and so the entity requested a travel ban to bar his escape.
In a separate petition, Md. Zakaria, the head of inquiry team and a deputy director of the ACC, made a similar request to the court regarding Jinnah.
Moreover, the ACC noted that it sought travel ban for Kabir Bin Anwar assuming his intention to flee.
The court has sent copies of the order to the Special Branch (SB) for further action.
