The University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) have signed a MoU to implement joint collaborative activities to improve the quality of higher education and research in Bangladesh.
In the presence of Malaysian Minister of Higher Education Dato' Seri DiRaja Dr Zambry bin Abdul Kadir, UGC Chairman Prof. S M A Faiz and EMGS CEO Novie Tajuddin handed over the MoU on Thursday. They earlier signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
Under this agreement, the two institutions have agreed to exchange updated information related to higher education, inform Bangladeshi students about higher education opportunities in Malaysia, give them assistance in admission to Malaysian universities, provide information on scholarships and financial assistance, and conduct research and capacity-building activities.
Bangladesh High Commissioner to Malaysia Shameem Ahsan attended the event.
Regarding the agreement, the UGC Chairman said 177 universities are now operating in Bangladesh under government and private managements.
"Bangladesh's initiative in creating higher education opportunities is undoubtedly commendable. But along with expansion of the higher education sector, improving the quality of education is also very important. Currently, the UGC is considering improving the quality of higher education as a major priority," he added.
UGC Member Prof Mohammad Anwar Hossain said Malaysia has created a new type of education model by combining their Islamic values with the modern education system of the Western world. This model can play a role in shaping the higher education of Bangladesh.
