Statement on Abrar murder

UN diplomat goes beyond norms: FM

Fresh list of 50,106 Rohingyas handed over to Myanmar

The United Nations has gone beyond its diplomatic norms by issuing a statement on the killing of Abrar Fahad, said Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Tuesday.

"Killing is taking place everywhere but when something happens in Bangladesh they issue statement and link good governance and freedom of speech with the incident," he told the media at his office.

The minister made the comments after he was asked why UN resident coordinator Mia Seppo was summoned to the foreign ministry.

Ms Seppo was summoned by the foreign ministry after issuing a statement on the murder of Abrar Fahad, a second year student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

Dr Momen said the incident of killing is taking place everywhere in the world. Recently, four people were killed in New York and the perpetrators were still absconding. Few days ago, there was a gruesome killing in Texas. But none of the UN had issued any statement when these killings took place, he said.

There is a tendency to hold the government responsible whereas the government had acted promptly just after the Abrar incident and all the perpetrators were nabbed, he added.

"So, we think they go beyond diplomatic norms and this tendency to hold the government responsible without any reason by issuing statement should be stopped," the minister categorically said.

"Fifty-five worshipers were killed inside a mosque in New Zealand. We feel sorry for that. Does it mean that there is no good governance in New Zealand or their government was responsible for the killing?" he argued.

The UK High Commissioner in Dhaka also issued a statement after Abrar murder and he also met the foreign secretary on Tuesday.

Responding to a question, the foreign minister said Bangladesh had handed over another list of 50,106 Rohingyas to the Myanmar government on Tuesday.

Previously, lists of 55 thousand Rohingya refugees were handed over to the Myanmar government for verification.
