Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni Wednesday said that private universities could play a significant role in developing skilled human resources to meet the demand in different fields of development, reports BSS.
"Private university Act-2010 has opened a new prospect of higher education in the country. The universities can meet the demand of manpower for manufacturing and services sectors through creating skilled human resources," she said while speaking as the chief guest at the 22nd Convocation of North South University on its Bashundhara Campus.
Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni, who attended as a representative of President Abdul Hamid also the Chancellor of the university, presided over the ceremony and conferred degrees on 3,487 graduates.
The minister also handed over gold medals to 11 meritorious students for their outstanding academic results.
She expressed the hope that the private universities would run their academic programmes in line with the private university Act 2010. Besides, selection of subjects, preparation of academic activities and teaching policy should be improved and made time-befitting, she added.
The University Act 2010 has been enacted aimed at ensuring quality of higher education, she said, adding, private university authorities need to improve academic curriculum gradually and select subjects, prepare academic activities and teaching policy.
Private universities should give priority to quality services instead of business, the minister said, adding that private universities would have to run their universities aimed at creating skilled human resource.
She said NSU is one of the largest universities in private sector and around 20,000 students have graduated from this university. "Many of them have been working with efficiency and good reputation in respective fields," she added.
Nobel Laureate Sir Richard John Roberts was present as the Convocation speaker.
Among others, Chairman of Board of Trustees MA Hashem, Vice Chancellor of NSU Professor Atiqul Islam and Dr Rita R Hallwell spoke on the occasion.
