The prices of sugar have recorded rise increased, although the holy month of Ramadan is still about one and a half months away.
Sugar sold at Tk 105-110 a kg in the market on Friday, up from Tk 95-100 last week.
According to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), sugar prices increased by 5.0 per cent in a week.
Meanwhile, the prices of fish and meat remained mostly unchanged, maintaining their previous highs.
Altaf Ali, a grocer in the capital's Adabar area, said the wholesale prices of sugar has increased.
"We make a profit of only Tk 4.0-5.0 per kg. Non-packaged sugar is selling at Tk 100 per kg, while the packaged one is priced at Tk 104-105 per kg, depending on the brand," he said.
He also said traders had stocked sugar, and some were selling it only to regular customers.
Sugar prices had increased by Tk 50 per sack (50 kg) in the last two weeks, added Ali.
On the other hand, the prices of onions, potatoes, and vegetables dropped significantly due to the increased supply of new produce.
Newly harvested local onions (murikata) sold at Tk 55-60 per kg, down from Tk 70-80 last week.
Indian onions also became cheaper, with prices falling by Tk 10 to Tk 60-65 per kg.
New potatoes were available at Tk 20-25 per kg.
Md Ajgar Hossain, a trader at the Mohammadpur Krishi Market, said, "New potatoes are cheaper and taste better, which is why the demand for the old ones has fallen."
Winter vegetable prices also declined due to higher supply, mostly selling for Tk 50-60 per kg.
Beans were priced between Tk 30 and Tk 60 per kg, compared to Tk 60-100 a week ago.
Radish sold at Tk 30-35 per kg. Brinjal prices dropped to Tk 40-80 per kg.
Medium-sized cauliflower and cabbage sold at Tk 20-30 per piece, a decline of Tk 5.0.
Turnip and papaya were available at Tk 30-40 per kg, while broccoli was priced at Tk 40-50 per kg.
Off-season vegetables, such as pointed gourd, bitter gourd, and okra, sold at Tk 70-80 per kg.
The egg and poultry market remained static.
Eggs sold at Tk 110-120 per dozen, broiler chicken at Tk 160-170 per kg, and Sonali/Pakistani chicken at Tk 260-280 per kg.
The prices of beef and mutton also remained unchanged.
