Violence against women rises 10pc in 2016: Survey

The violence against women in the country increased by more than 10 per cent in 2016 compared to that of pervious year, according to a latest survey.

A total of 4,896 women were tortured in different ways including rape, sexual harassment, acid attack, kidnap, trafficking, physical torture, dowry, eve-teasing, child marriage etc., said a press release.

The number of victims was 4,436 in 2015, it said.

Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) conducted the survey based on 14 national newspapers.

Some 1,050 women were raped during January- December period of last year - 166 gang raped, 44 killed after rape, 165 attempted to rape, 200 subjected to sexual harassment, 39 victims of acid attack, one killed by acid attack, said the report.
