BAGERHAT, Mar 26 (UNB): The recent fire incidents in the Shaplar Beel and Tepar Beel areas of the Sundarbans have been extinguished, but smoke is still rising from the base of some trees.

On Wednesday morning, personnel from the Forest Department and Fire Brigade noticed light flames and smoke coming from a few isolated areas within the burnt forest.

"These were quickly put out by spraying water using a fire hose. The affected area is being soaked to ensure no traces of the fire remain," Chief Forest Officer Amir Hossain Chowdhury confirmed.

The Forest Department and Fire Brigade continue to monitor and search the area.

A complete announcement regarding the fire's extinguishment is expected on Thursday, added the officer. The Forest Department is also taking steps to enhance the firefighting capacity of Sundarbans staff in case of future fires.
