CHATTOGRAM, July 13: The Water Development Board (WDB) launched a large-scale eviction drive in Chattogram on Sunday morning to reclaim the government land, occupied by 39 influential grabbers.

The land, worth around Tk 3.20 billion, spans approximately 32 acres along the coastal embankment area between Uttar Halishahar and Uttar Kattoli.

The three-day drive began in Uttar Kattoli area, targeting illegal establishments adjacent to the Sagorika Mini Stadium and along the embankment beside the Bandar Link Road. By midday, eight unauthorised structures were demolished, freeing up 6-7 acres of land.

The eviction drive was conducted under the supervision of three executive magistrates (assistant commissioners) from the Chattogram district administration: Hossain Muhammad, Farista Karim, and Md Moinul Hasan. Army and police personnel also assisted the drive, which would continue till Tuesday.

Borno Hoque, sub-divisional engineer of WDB Chattogram Division-1, said, "We have launched the eviction drive after years of illegal occupation. Once the land is cleared, we will set up boundary pillars and fencing, followed by afforestation to ensure its long-term preservation."
