A weeklong campaign will be will carried out across the country from today (Thursday) to make people aware about child-abduction rumours, said Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwari on Wednesday, reports UNB.

"People responsible for spreading rumours over child-lifting will be dealt with an iron hand, no matter who they are and how strong they are," said the IGP while speaking at a press briefing at the Police Headquarters in the city.

As part of the campaign, Patwari said, law enforcers will remain out there in the field and they will work with public representatives and community police.

Police will also visit different schools and colleges at the thana level while imams will deliver sermons at mosques during Jumm'a prayers on Friday next, he added.

"A total of eight people have so far been lynched following child-lifting rumours- none of them, killed in the mass beatings, was either a child-lifter or a kidnapper.

And that has been proved after investigation. All of them were innocent," the IGP added.

He said 60 Facebook page links, 25 Youtube links and 10 news portals have already been blocked for spreading child-lifting rumours.

"A vested quarter is involved in spreading rumours for destabilising the country. They're doing it both from home and abroad."

"We've got information that a person involved in the politics of an opposition party is involved in spreading the rumours with his Facebook posts from Dubai," said Javed Patwari.

A total of 31 cases have so far been filed against 103 people across the country for spreading child-lifting rumours, he added.
