WMS observes International Women’s Day

CHITTAGONG, Mar 8: Western Marine Shipyard (WMS), a leading shipbuilding company based in the port city, celebrated International Women's Day on Thursday through a programme in honour of the female workforce of the high-tech engineering industry.

Nine women are now employed in the shipbuilding company located on the south bank of the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong.

The professionals are engineers and naval architects from Bangladesh Marine Academy, Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) and Chittagong Polytechnic Institute.

Besides, a number of women are doing internship on shipbuilding in the company.

Addressing the function, Sakhawat Hossain, managing director of WMS, underlined the need for focusing on women's importance in the country's economic progress.

He said the WMS believes in women empowerment.

"Women's contribution to the high-tech industry is very impressive and thus plays a pivotal role in our economic development," he added.

Captain Sohail Hasan, chairman of the executive committee of the shipyard, stressed the need for more employment of women in the sector that will lay a positive impact on the industry's progress.
