Young readers lean towards novels, thrillers

Novels and thriller books have emerged as major attractions for young readers at the Amar Ekushey Book Fair this year.

Alongside general storybooks, sales of novels and thrillers based on mystery, adventure, and suspense have increased noticeably.

Publishers and sales representatives say that teenagers and young adults are showing a strong preference for these genres, a trend clearly reflected in the overall book sales at the fair.

On Wednesday, the 14th day of the fair, a visit to the Bangla Academy premises and Suhrawardy Udyan revealed a significant interest among visitors in thriller titles displayed at various publishing stalls.

Many readers were seen browsing through books, flipping through pages, or searching for specific authors before making purchases. Sales representatives noted that in many cases, thriller books are selling at a pace comparable to novels.

Publishers say a large segment of the fair's visitors consists of teenagers and young adults, who also make up the majority of buyers. Most of them are purchasing storybooks, novels, and thrillers. However, the combination of mystery, fast-paced narratives, adventurous plots, and suspenseful challenges makes thriller books particularly appealing to this group.

Interest in novels and thrillers is not limited to younger readers. Middle-aged and older visitors are also purchasing books in these genres, often continuing their long-standing reading habits. Many are actively searching for newly released works by their favorite authors while exploring the stalls.

According to the information center of the Bangla Academy, since the beginning of the book fair until 13th day, the number of newly published books has reached 1,142. Among them, 180 are novels, making it the second-highest category among newly-released titles.

Several major publishing houses participating in the fair report high demand for novels and thrillers. Sales representatives from publishing houses such as Ideal, Onnesha, Nalanda, Mizan Publishers, Prothoma, Oitijjho, Onnodhara, Kakoli, Onindya, Shobha, and Mawla Brothers say that thriller titles are performing particularly well in sales this year.

As in previous years, books by popular writers including Humayun Ahmed, Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, Anisul Hoque, Imdadul Haq Milan, and Sadat Hossain remain among the top-selling titles.
