AL, BNP mayoral hopefuls submit nomination papers

CHATTOGRAM, Feb 27: The mayoral candidates of the ruling Awami League (AL) and opposition BNP submitted their nomination papers on Thursday to contest the forthcoming Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) polls slated for March 29.

AL mayoral candidate Rejaul Karim Chowdhury submitted his nomination paper to returning officer Mohammed Hasanujjaman in the early hours of the day.

Mayor of CCC and general secretary of Chattogram City AL AJM Nasir Uddin, acting president of city AL Mahatab Uddin Chowdhury, vice president Khorshed Alam Sujan, president of Chattogram north district unit of AL MA Salam, general secretary of Chattogram south district unit of AL Mofijur Rahman, treasurer of city AL Abdus Salam and leaders of AL Advocate Ibrahim Hossain Babul, Badiul Alam, Naim Uddin Chowdhury, Shafiqul Islam Faruk accompanied him during submission of the nomination form.

After submitting the nomination paper, Rejaul Karim Chowdhury said, "I am the representative of AL chief Sheikh Hasina. If I win, I will implement the development projects of Prime Minister in Chattogram."

He also expressed the hope of his win.

Later around 2:00 pm, mayoral candidate of the opposition BNP Dr Shahadat Hossain along with BNP leader and former minister Jafarul Islam Chowdhury, central organising secretary of BNP Mahbubur Rahman Shamim, convener of South district unit of BNP Abu Sufian, general secretary of city BNP Abul Hashem Bakkar, organising secretary Manjurul Alam Manju and city BNP leaders Advocate Badrul Anwar, MA Aziz, Mohammed Meah Bhola, Joinal Abedin Zia, Ikbal Chowdhury, SM Saiful Alam, Engineer Belayet Hossain,, Kaji Belal, RU Chowdhury Shaheen, Yasin Chowdhury Liton, Abdul Manan and Shamsul Haque submitted the paper to returning officer.

While submitting the nomination paper, the BNP mayoral candidate urged the Election Commission to shift the polls date to March 31 from March 29.

He said, "If the polls date is deferred by two days, it will be convenient for people to participate in the CCC polls."

He added, "We've observed that there have been no fair polls in the regime of AL. But, we are fighting for the democracy and people's rights to vote.”
