AL leader Ajoy Kar Khokon arrested

Police have arrested Awami League (AL) leader and former Bangladesh Chhatra League general secretary Ajoy Kar Khokon, report agencies.

He was arrested in the capital's Gulshan area by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in the early hours of Wednesday.

"He organised the recent marches by the banned Awami League," said DMP Additional Police Commissioner and DB official Md Shafiqul Islam.

Police are also checking if any other cases are pending against him, including possible links to incidents during the July Uprising.

Ajoy was the general secretary of the Chhatra League committee for the 1998-2002 term. He later became active in Awami League politics.

He applied for the party's nomination for the Kishoreganj-5 parliamentary seat during the 10th general election, but did not receive it. When he attempted to run as an independent candidate, the Election Commission scrapped his nomination.
