AL mayoral hopeful Atiqul wants to make city a world-class one

Awami League (AL) -backed mayor candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Atiqul Islam said on Wednesday he want to make the capital a 'world standard' city if he is elected, reports BSS.

"The city is yours. So, everyone should work from his own place," he said.

The mayoral hopeful made the remarks while speaking at a dialogue organised by National Press Club at its auditorium with club President Saiful Alam in the chair.

The National Press Club organised the dialogue titled 'Why I want to become a mayor?' where Atiqul expressed his views and dreams about the city.

Eight panelists from different media also took part in the dialogue. They were ZI Mamun of ATN Bangla, Rahul Raha of Channel 24, Sukanto Gupto Alok of Desh TV, Ajoy Das Gupta of daily Somokal, Probhash Amin of ATN News, Soharab Hoosain of daily Prothom Alo, Pronab Shaha of DBC news and Khalid Mohiuddin of Independent TV .

JPC senior vice president Omar Faruque, vice president Azizul Islam Bhuiyan and joint general secretary Shahed Chowdhury, among others, were present in the meeting while JPC treasurer Shyamol Kumar Dutta conducted it.

Atiqul said, "We lost our beloved former mayor Annisul Haque. Now, I want to materialise his dream and do his unfinished works. I want to make the city a beautiful one."

He said everyone wants a drug-free and terrorism-free state. "If you want a drug-free and terrorism-free state, you should recover your playgrounds so that the children and youths can spend time in sports."

About the eviction of hawkers, the mayor aspirant said, "I'm not against the eviction. But I want a sustainable solution so that the hawkers can survive. I want to be a mayor for all - not only for the rich, but also for the poor."

He said there are many playgrounds in the city. "If we make underground markets in the ground for the hawkers then they will survive," he added.
