AL MP Rushema Begum dies

Rushema Begum, a member of Parliament from a reserved seat for the Awami League (AL), has died from a heart attack at the age of 85, her family said, report agencies..

Rushema was admitted to the Faridpur Heart Foundation Hospital and breathed her last at 11.35 pm on Tuesday, according to her family.

Rushema was the wife of Imamuddin Ahmad, former president of the Faridpur district wing of the AL and a close aide to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

She was the principal of the Ishan Memorial High School in Faridpur. She took oath as an Awami League MP from Faridpur on February 20 from a seat reserved for women.

Her husband Imamuddin, who died in a road accident in 2016, had also served as an MP from Faridpur Sadar constituency.

She leaves behind two sons and a daughter.

Rushema was rushed to the hospital after falling ill at her residence in Habeli Gopalpur area in Faridpur on Tuesday night, said her son Saiful Ahad Selim.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina expressed on Wednesday profound shock at the death of Awami League (AL) MP Rushema Begum, also known as Rushema Imam.

In a condolence message, she said Rushema was a member of the AL family and had been working for the welfare of the people throughout her life.

Sheikh Hasina prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and offered sympathy to the bereaved family.
