AL now an abandoned political party: Fakhrul

July 06, 2014 00:00:00

BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir claimed that Awami League has become an abandoned political party after the January-5 election.

“Awami League can’t face the opposition politically as it has become a deserted political party after the January-5 election. It has also become politically bankrupt. That’s why its leaders are making unguarded remarks,” he said, according to a news agency.

Fakhrul, the BNP acting secretary general, was addressing a protest meeting at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by Swadhinata Forum, marking the third anniversary of police attack on BNP publicity affairs secretary Zainul Abedin Farroque Sunday.

He alleged that the government having failed to probe any graft allegation against BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman is carrying out false propaganda against him as it is scared of his popularity.

The BNP leader urged the government to hold a fresh election under a non-party administration after quitting power showing respect to the hopes and aspirations of the country’s people. Otherwise, he threatened that the government will have to shoulder responsibility for any evolving situation.

Narrating the ‘brutal’ attack on Farroque, the then opposition chief whip, by police, he said the attack was not on any individual rather it was the attack on parliamentary politics.
