AL should be tried for atrocities during July Uprising: Fakhrul

FE REPORT | July 10, 2025 00:00:00

Not only ousted leader Sheikh Hasina as an individual but the Awami League as a party should also be tried for the atrocities perpetrated during the July uprising, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir suggested on Wednesday.

"Every member of Awami League must be held accountable. They must be brought under the law. Sheikh Hasina's trial has already begun. We are hopeful that all those involved will be brought to justice, he added.

Mirza Fakhrul was talking to reporters after paying a visit to BNP Chairperson's adviser Prof Abdul Quddus and Prof Siraj Uddin Ahmed, who are undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital at Agargaon in the capital.

The BNP secretary general said, "Sheikh Hasina, the head of the Awami League, is alone; I think the one responsible for the killing of thousands of people. Her trial has begun. We are hopeful that she and everyone who is involved with her in the genocide and this fascist attack will be tried. And if the party is brought under the law, if the party is also seen (involved), I think they should be tried as a party."

In reply to a question, Mirza Fakhrul claimed that his party was the biggest victim of torture, murder and enforced disappearance- during the Awami League's fascist regime.

"We always think that political parties that will support fascism, those who will work for fascism...especially the Awami League, every individual who has worked should be punished...they should be brought under the law and punished," he continued.

Mirza Fakhrul also commented that the country should be put on the right track for the country's interest, adding, "It is the responsibility of every political party to put the country on the right track and the faster it can be put on the right track, the better."

"An elected government is needed, a government with which the people will have a relationship. That is why we are participating in the reforms that we are saying. We have raised the demand for every reform. So there is no conflict between reforms and elections... the two will go together," he said.
