GAZIPUR, June 27 (UNB): Awami League candidate Jahangir Alam was declared elected in Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election on Wednesday.

He defeated his rival BNP contestant Hasan Uddin Sarker by a huge margin.

Jahangir bagged 4,00,010 votes while Hasan Uddin polled 1,97,611 in 416 centres out of 425, said Returning officer Rakib Uddin Mandol while announcing the unofficial results at a press briefing at Banga Taj Auditorium around 12 pm.

The voting in nine polling centres including Khartoil Mansur Ali Adarsha School, West Joydebpur Madinatul Ulum Madrasah, Bhogra Government Primary School and Daffodil Kindergarten-2 was suspended due to violence and capturing of polling stations and giving fake votes, he said.

Earlier, the balloting in the GCC election was held amid BNP's various allegations of irregularities and vote fraud at many polling stationson Tuesday.

However, the ruling party and its mayoral candidate claimed that the balloting was largely fair and BNP brought the allegations to make the polls controversial.

The voting at the city corporation with a total of 1,137,736 voters -- 569,935 males and 567,801 female -- was held from 8am to 4pm without any break on Tuesday.

The turnout of voters was said to be around 50 per cent, said the Election Commission (EC).

Meanwhile, BNP turns down the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election results on Wednesday and demanded reelection to it.

"It's only a mockery in the name of election in Gazipur. They've invented a new tactic of vote rigging and applied it," said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Speaking at a press conference, he further said, "We turn down Gazipur city election results with hatred and we demand reelection to it."

BNP arranged the press conference at its chairperson's Gulshan office to give the party's formal reaction over the election results.

Fakhrul urged people to take a strong stance against vote rigging in Gazipur.

He alleged that the Gazipur election was held in the same manner as in Khulna.

"Awami League has taken the election results into its favour by using law enforcers, administration and the Election Commission as it has got isolated from

people," the BNP leader said.
