A Dhaka court has placed former industries minister and senior Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amu on a six-day remand in a case over the killing of businessman Abdul Wadud in the capital's New Market area during the anti-discrimination protests, report agencies.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shaheen Reza passed the order on Thursday after hearing a petition for a 10-day remand, said the court's public prosecutor Omar Faruk.

Though the defendant's lawyers submitted a petition for bail, the court rejected it.

During the remand hearing of Amu, his lawyer Swapan Roy Chowdhury was physically assaulted by a group of lawyers and driven out of the court premises.

Swapan Roy Chowdhury came under attack when he commented that the speech of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Chief Public Prosecutor (PP) Omar Faruk is 'political'.

Swapan Roy said, "I have no objection to the PP's speech, but it would have been more appropriate to deliver such statements on a political platform."
