Leaders of the country's textile and clothing sector have pledged their support to Atiqul Islam, the Awami League mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation.

President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Md Siddiqur Rahman, Vice-President of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) Mansur Ahmed and President of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) Mohammad Ali Khokhon jointly extended their support at a view-exchange meeting in the city on Tuesday.

Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) President Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, BGMEA's former president Abdus Salam Murshedy, and Vice-Presidents Faruque Hassan, Mohammed Nasir and SM Mannan Kochi attended the meeting with Atiqul Islam, also a former president of BGMEA, as the chief guest.

Pointing out that 15 lawmakers, including four ministers, came from the readymade garment (RMG) sector, the leaders called for necessary measures to address the existing challenges facing the sector.

Lauding the role of Atiqul Islam in the aftermath of Tazreen Fashions fire and Rana Plaza building collapse, they made an appeal to all to support him in the mayoral election.

They also expressed the hope that if elected, Mr Islam would carry out the unfinished work of late Mayor Annisul Huq to transform the capital city into a livable one.

Speaking on the occasion, Atiqul Islam highlighted the features of his election manifesto, including the pledge to build a green, livable and traffic jam-free Dhaka.

He also said if elected, he would launch a digital application through which the city dwellers can inform the authority of their problems and sufferings, and steps would be taken immediately to address them.
