Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury urged the government on Saturday to amend the Constitution for paving the way for formation of either a caretaker or a national government to hold the next general election, reports UNB.
"An election-time caretaker government or a national government based on the consensus of political parties must be formed amending the Constitution for holding a free and fair national election. It's now a people's basic demand," he said.
President of Bikolpo Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) B Chowdhury came up with the demand while exchanging greetings with his party leaders and activists at his office in the city, marking Eid-ul-Fitr.
The former president said there is no alternative to constituting either a caretaker government or a national government if the government is willing to hold a true general election.
The BDB chief said it is regrettable that the ministers of the government ruled out the demand for caretaker government saying there is no such provision in the Constitution.
"But they also know it very well that this form of election-time government can be restored by amending the Constitution."
B Chowdhury said a bill on the caretaker government system was passed within a night in 1996 when he was the deputy leader of Parliament.
A fresh election was held within four months. Awami League won the election and formed the government, he added.
