September 02, 2019 00:00:00

Urging BNP to do politics of welfare for the mass people, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said on Sunday the country had turned into a safe haven of militants and terrorists during the BNP regime, reports BSS.

"Ziaur Rahman grabbed the power with firearms and his wife Begum Khaleda Zia established the rule of terror and militancy during her 10 years in power," he told a press briefing at his Secretariat office here.

The minister said many leaders joined BNP from other parties to enjoy leftover of power and its' founder Ziaur Rahman had picked them.

Dr Hasan said BNP could not give good governance to the nation rather the country had turned into a safe haven of militants and terrorists.

The country became champion in corruption for five times during their regime, he added.

The minister said BNP, as an opposition party, did politics based on militancy and terrorism in the last 10 and a half years which is really sad.

He said BNP killed former finance minister of Awami League Shah AMS Kibria and AL lawmaker Ahsanullah Master by carrying out attacks on public rallies in the brought daylight.

"BNP didn't give permission to hold the rally on August 21 in 2004 at Muktangon. They gave permission in the midnight of August 20 to hold the rally at Bangabandhu Avenue so that they can carry out the grenade attacks as per their plan," Dr Hasan said.

He said Awami League government always gives permission to BNP to hold rallies and meetings whenever they want.

Expressing his hope that BNP will do positive politics in future, Dr Hasan said, "I congratulate BNP on its 41st founding anniversary. And I also hope that BNP will do politics for the welfare of common people shunning militancy and terrorism."

Replying to a question about a recent road accident, the information minister said the incident of Krisna Roy's losing a leg is really unfortunate and unexpected.

Those involved in it would be brought under trial and the government is working on this issue, he added.

He said it is so much worrying that some drivers (not all drivers) are reckless. "I'm urging the bus, truck owner associations and workers' unions not to give vehicles to any unprofessional drivers and helpers," he said.

Dr Hasan urged the people as well the drivers to be more cautious.

Replying to another question on IS militant issue, the minister said there is no existence of IS in the country. "But the militants show that they still exist. I hope, the political parties including BNP won't give shelter to the militants," he added.
