Bargaining over Khaleda's release to be a bad example in politics: Hanif

April 21, 2019 00:00:00

Awami League acting general secretary Mahbub-Ul-Alam Hanif said on Saturday bargaining over the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, now in jail on graft charge, would be a bad instance in the country's politics, reports BSS.

"Bargaining over Khaleda Zia's release will be a bad example in politics," he told a news conference after the party's secretary-level meeting at the AL President's Dhanmondi political office here.

He referred to a recent remark of BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed, where he (Moudud) said the elected BNP members of parliament (MPs) would take oath if Begum Zia is released. Hanif said, "Begum Zia's release issue has no relation with BNP's joining parliament."

Hanif added: "Elected representatives are liable to the voters as the voters did not vote them (MPs) for any convicted person."

The AL leader mentioned that Begum Zia is now serving imprisonment on graft charges, but not in any political cases.

"She (Khaleda) must get freed as per the law. Apart from this, she has no scope to go abroad but the Presidential mercy can help her to get release in this connection," he said.

About the outcome of the meeting, the AL joint secretary said Friday's meeting of AL advisory council and central executive committee had talks about the programme for the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and recasting the party grassroots.

He said the meeting has also decided to collect evidence of memorable incidents with Bangabandhu, including photographs and Bangabandhu's handwriting, if anybody had, and asked him to take help of AL district unit president and secretary in this connection.

Hanif, who also chaired the AL secretary-level meeting on Saturday, said AL eight teams led by organising secretaries in-charge will oversee the organisational activities of Bangladesh Awami League throughout the country.

AL joint general secretaries Dr Dipu Moni, Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, organising secretaries - Ahmed Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque, Advocate Mezbah Uddin Siraj, office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, relief and social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, science and technology secretary Engineer Abdus Sabur, forest and environment secretary Delwar Hossain and agriculture secretary Faridunnahar Laily, among others, were present.
