BCL clash leaves student bullet-injured at SUST

Two get expelled, 10 suspended

SYLHET, Mar 21 (UNB): A student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) suffered bullet wound during a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the campus on Tuesday night.

The victim was identified as SM Abdullah Al Rony, a student of Food Engineering and Tea Technology department. SUST Proctor Prof Zahir Uddin Ahmed said two factions of SUST unit BCL -- one led by Abu Syed Akando and the other led by Tariqul Islam - both vice-presidents of the unit, had been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy on the campus.

On Tuesday, a group of BCL men, led by Akando, Syed Jewel and Sajidul Islam Sabuj, swooped on Tariqul Islam while he was gossiping at Satkara Restaurant near the main entrance of the university around 10 pm, he said.

At one stage of scuffle, Tariqul opened fire leaving Rony who was present at the restaurant injured.

Rony who sustained bullet injuries to his leg was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, said Faruk Ahmed, sub-inspector of the hospital police camp.

Another report adds: Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) later expelled two of its central leaders and suspended 10 leaders and activists of its SUST unit over the clash between the unit's two factions that left SM Abdullah Al Rony bullet-injured.

The expelled BCL men are- Abu Sayeed Akondo and Sajedul Islam, members of its central unit, while the suspended leaders are Syed Joim, vice-president of BCL Sust unit, Ashraful Alam Antu, joint general secretary, Dolon Ahmed ,organizing secretary, Lakkhan Chandra ,liberation war affair secretary of and members- Monkar Kazi, Towfikur Rahman, Basir Mia, Meher Uddin Himel, Raihan Ahmed and Shariful Islam Sharif.
