Big electorate contrast between Gazipur-5 and Jhalakathi-1

The number of voters in Gazipur-5 parliamentary constituency is almost four times higher than that of Jhalakathi-1, according to the recently published draft delimitation of constituencies, reports UNB.

Among the country's 300 parliamentary seats, the highest 669,661 voters are there in Gazipur-5 constituency, while the lowest 176,985 in Jhalakati-1, as per the factsheet of the Election Commission (EC).

The population size is also almost four times higher in Gazipur-5 compared to that of Jhalakati-1. The number of population is 855,564 in Gazipur-5 while that of Jhalakati-1 constituency 272,765.

The EC on March 14 last published the draft delimitation of the 300 constituencies bringing changes in demarcation of 38 parliamentary seats in 16 districts ahead of the 11th national election to be held in December next.

Of the 300 parliamentary seats, there are three constituencies which have six lakh voters each while nine others more than five lakh voters.

In a marked contrast, there are three constituencies where the number of voters are only less than two lakh.

The three constituencies having more than six lakh voters are Gazipur-5 (669,661 voters), Gazipur-1 (669,330) and Narayanganj-4 (656,771).

In terms of voter size, the three lowest constituencies are Jhalakati-1 (176,985 voters), Pirojpur-3 (188,962) and Jessore-6 (193,562).

Among other constituencies, over four lakh voters are there in 50 constituencies, while over three lakh voters in nearly 150 constituencies and more than two lakh voters in 80 parliamentary seats.

Now the total number of the country's voters is some 10.41 crore as per the EC's updated voter roll published on January 31, 2018. So, each constituency has nearly 3.5 lakh voters on average.

The nine constituencies having more than five lakh voters are Comilla-10 (574,309 voters), Mymensingh-4 (557,841), Dhaka-18 (560,832), Sylhet-1 (543,859), Noakhali-4 (543,483), Dhaka-2 (538,270),Jessore-3 (524,075), Chittagong-11 (514,683) and Brahmanbaria-3 (514,043).

In May next, the Commission is likely to finalise the delimitation of constituencies after the disposal of complaints ahead of the 11th parliamentary elections to be held in December this year.

This time the 38 constituencies that saw changes in their boundaries are Nilphamari-3 and 4, Rangpur-1, 3 and 4, Kurigram-3 and 4, Pabna-1 and 2, Magura-1 and 2, Khulna-3 and 4, Satkhira-3 and 4, Jamalpur-4 and 5, Dhaka-2, 3, 7, 14 and 19, Narayanganj-4 and 5, Shariatpur-2 and 3, Maulvibazar-2 and 4, Brahmanbaria-5 and 6, Comilla-1, 2, 6 and 10, Noakhali-4 and 5, Chittagong-7 and 8.

EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said the EC will receive complaints regarding any constituency till April 1 and dispose of these by April 30 next after hearing.

"If anyone is aggrieved, he or she can lodge complaint with the Commission by April 1.

The demarcation of any constituency may get change when the EC will finalise the delimitation," he told the news agency.
