BMP wants an end to extrajudicial killings

FE Report | June 11, 2018 00:00:00

Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) on Sunday called for an immediate end to extrajudicial killings in the name of the ongoing anti-drug crackdown.

Some 138 people have reportedly been shot dead by the members of law enforcement agencies across the country since May 15 and 10,046 more arrested during the ongoing anti-narcotics drive.

The law enforcement agencies must be held accountable for any violation of human rights and those who are involved in such killings will have to be brought to justice, the BMP said at a press conference held at the Sufia Kamal Bhaban auditorium in the city on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad president Ayesha Khanam said all sources of drugs must be dismantled soon to root out the social menace.

"The killings by the lawmen in the drive have created a frightening situation among people. Murder without trial is against the constitution, and it is a violation of human rights. It can't be acceptable if the accused are killed without bringing them to justice, "she added.

Ayesha Khanam urged the government to bring drug lords and dealers to book.

She said the organisation supports anti-narcotics drive but the system of the drive should be democratic.

The government should have close watch on the agencies concerned, which are responsible for curbing the drug-related offences, she observed.

The organisation also called upon the Election Commission to take proper steps to ensure free, fair, peaceful and neutral polls.

BMP general secretary Maleka Banu, among others, was present at the event.
