BNP criticises govt for continuous election date shift

FE REPORT | April 14, 2025 00:00:00

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior leaders criticised the interim government's uncertain election date between December this year and June next year demanding a certain roadmap and election date by this year.

BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed raised the question whom Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus is serving by giving vague election dates and repeatedly shifting between December and June.

The senior BNP leader asked, "Whom are you encouraging? Which undemocratic force are you giving benefits to in this middle ground? To benefit whom, to implement whose agenda, the Chief Adviser is often coming and going from December to June? Why can't you stay in one place?"

"You are a world-famous and respected person. But the nation and the international community will not take such shifting (statements about elections between December and June) well," he went on.

Ahmed said these things as the chief guest while addressing the National Representative Council 2025 of the Bhasani Anushari Parishad at the Jatiya Press Club auditorium on Sunday.

Referring to the meeting between Yunus and BNP, he said quoting Yunus that his (Yunus) activities were being conducted with the national elections in view in December.

"I have sat with the Election Commission and talked to it. All their election preparations will be completed by next June. They have said that they are eager to hold elections by December," he added.

He said the August changeover happened from the aspiration of democratic transformation.

"If someone wants to call this a revolution, then I will express my regret. This is not a social revolution. It is not a revolution to change economic and social customs and systems. A democratic mass uprising, a student mass uprising, has taken place against fascism to regain democratic rights from democratic aspirations," he explained.
