AUGUST 21 GRENADE ATTACK CASE

BNP expresses satisfaction at HC verdict

All cases against Tarique politically motivated: Fakhrul

FE REPORT | December 02, 2024 00:00:00

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expressed satisfaction with the High Court's (HC) verdict in the August 21 grenade attack case.

The verdict, delivered on Sunday, acquitted all convicted individuals, including BNP Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman and former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in a statement from London, said the historic verdict proved that all cases filed against Tarique Rahman by the fascist Awami League (AL) regime were politically motivated.

"I express my profound gratitude to Almighty Allah. The verdict has proved that the fallen fascist implicated Tarique Rahman in the grenade attack case just for political purposes. He has been acquitted by the court through legal procedures."

Mirza Fakhrul called upon the countrymen to pray to the Almighty for expressing gratitude following the HC verdict.

Meanwhile, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, "The verdict in the August 21 grenade attack case has established justice. The AL misused state power to unlawfully sentence Tarique Rahman and others. The court has now delivered a rightful judgment."

He was speaking at a press conference in the party headquarters at Naya Paltan in the capital following the verdict.

Rizvi said the people of the country are now living in a free environment and expecting democracy after the fall of autocratic Sheikh Hasina regime.

He noted that since the fall of the Hasina regime, the Indian government and a section of media have been desperately and relentlessly campaigning against Bangladesh and the existing communal harmony here.

BNP joint secretaries general Khairul Kabir Khokon and Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel were present, among others.

In another programme, BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas said the August 21 grenade attack was a part of conspiracy, conducted by another country.

He made the comment at an event - 'Independence, democracy and rights to vote considering the present situation' - organised by Shadhinata Forum at the National Press Club. Abu Naser Mohammad Rahmatullah, president of the forum, presided over the event.

Mirza Abbas said BNP was never involved in the grenade attack. A particular country planned the incident to implicate Begum Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman. The party has now got justice following the verdict.

Tarique Rahman will soon return to the country, he added.
