A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to BNP vice-chairman Major (Retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.
Judge of the Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka, Md Atiqul Islam, passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed by Hafizuddin.
Advocate Masud Ahmed Talukder appeared in the court on behalf of Hafizuddin while Advocate Azad Rahman and Advocate Hemayet Uddin Khan Hiron stood for the state.
In the hearing, Advocate Masud Ahmed said, "Major Hafizuddin is sick. He didn't send any mail to anyone. There is no such allegation in the case statement against him. So he can get bail."
The state lawyers opposed the plea for bail .
After hearing, the court granted bail to Hafizuddin rejecting a petition for remand.
Earlier on Saturday, law enforcers arrested Hafizuddin from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the case.
Hafizuddin in collusion with the chief of BNP chairperson's security force sent a false, fabricated, and baseless mail about the government intelligence agencies, alleged Officer-in-charge of Pallabi Police Station Nazrul Islam.
Hafizuddin's name came up in the interrogation of Colonel (Retd) Ishaque Mian, the chief of BNP chairperson's security force, who was also arrested on Saturday under a case filed under the Digital Security Act.
According to Ishaque's case statement, police seized a laptop with a mail sent from Ishaque's personal email account to one Hiren Mukharjee on May 2, 2019 at 11:57 pm about the role of intelligence agencies during the December 30 national election.
