March 16, 2018 00:00:00

BNP and its associate bodies will observe the 7th death anniversary of its former secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain today (Friday) with due respect, reports UNB.

The party has taken various programmes, including placing wreaths at his grave, offering fateha there and holding a mild mahfil, in observance of the death anniversary.

Besides, Khandaker Delwar Hossain Smriti Parishad and Manikganj unit BNP will also mark the day amid various programmes.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with some other central leaders of the party will offer fateha and place wreaths at Delwar's grave in Manikganj's Pachuria after Juma prayers.

They will also join a mild mahfil at the late BNP leader's Manikganj residence after Asr prayers.

A milad mahfil will also be held at the party's Nayapaltan central office.

Khandaker Delwar Hossain Smriti Parishad is scheduled to hold a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club on Saturday on the occasion.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul issued a message on Thursday recalling Delwar's contributions to the party and his role after 1/11 political changeover in foiling various plots against BNP.

Born in Manikganj on February 1 in 1933, Delwar was elected MP for four times and became Chief Whip of Jatiya Sangsad. A valiant freedom fighter, Delwar had been involved with BNP politics since its birth.

Moments before she was sent to jail, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had nominated Delwar the party's secretary general expelling Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan in 2007 during the rule of army-backed caretaker government.

He was also elected party secretary general in the party's 5th national council on December 8, 2009.

Delwar died of old-age complications at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on March 16, 2011.
