November 05, 2018 00:00:00

The High Court on Sunday granted bail to BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury in a case filed under the ICT Act, reports UNB.

An HC bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Zafar Ahmed granted the bail following a petition filed by his lawyer Advocate Zainul Abedin and Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon.

Earlier on October 21, Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Akbar Hossain Mridha had sent Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury to jail rejecting his bail petition in the case.

Later, Khasru's lawyer filed the petition with the High Court challenging the lower court order.

The High Court issued a rule askin the government to explain as to why the BNP leader should not be given permanent bail. It also granted bail to him until disposal of the rule.

Chattogram city unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) acting general secretary Zakaria Dastagir filed the case under sections 57 (2) of ICT Act and 15 (3) of Special Power Act with Kotwali police station on August 4.

A reported audio clip of telephonic conversation between the BNP leader and an unknown boy for intensifying the student movement, which erupted after the death of two students in a road accident in the capital, went viral on Facebook and YouTube.
