BNP urges govt to curb essentials’ prices

FE REPORT | November 18, 2024 00:00:00

BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Abdus Salam has called upon the interim government to control the prices of essentials considering the sufferings of low income group.

He made the call while speaking at a discussion organised by Jagroto Bangladesh at the Jatiya Press Club in the city on Sunday, demanded immediate withdrawal of false cases filed against party chairperson Khaleda Zia and acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

"The holy month of Ramadan is coming. Please pay attention and take effective steps so that the prices of essentials couldn't rise further during the month of fasting," he said.

Mentioning the skyrocketing prices of essentials, he said "People form long queues in front of TCB trucks for purchasing essential commodities at subsidised rates," he said.

He called upon the interim government not to give priority on constructing stadiums, rather fighting against dengue, checking nagging traffic jams and cooling down the overheated prices of essentials.

Mr Abdus Salam asked why the false cases filed against Tarique Rahman are yet to withdrawn.

He said considering the present reality the interim government is needed and at the same time the country also needs Tarique Rahman to fight against expansionist forces.

He said it is a matter of great regret that injured persons during July-August 2024 mass uprising against Sheikh Hasina took to the streets in recent days demanding proper treatment even after three months of the downfall of the autocratic ruler.

President of Jagroto Bangladesh Md Jahirul Islam Kalim presided over the event, also attended by BNP joint secretary general advocate Abdus Salam Azad and others.

"It is the responsibility of the caretaker government to hold a free, fair and acceptable national election and provide proper treatment to the injured persons of mass uprising against Sheikh Hasina rather than building 250 stadiums," he said.
