BNP on Sunday warned of taking organisational action if anyone of its leaders and activists takes part in the upcoming Upazila Elections violating the party decision, reports UNB.

Party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi issued the warning at a press conference at the BNP's Nayapaltan central office.

"I would like to inform our leaders and activists at all levels that they cannot join the upcoming Upazila Elections. We will take organisational action if anyone violates our decision," Rizvi said.

The BNP leader said they will take punitive action like expulsion from the party if any of its leaders and activists participate in the Upazila elections.

Even, those who become the party's primary member will not be able to participate in the Upazila elections, Rizvi added.

Elections to 87 upazila parishads in 12 districts under Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet and Rajshahi divisions will be held in the first phase on March 10 while the second phase of the election is slated for March 18, the third for March 24, the fourth for March 31 and the fifth for June 18.

Meanwhile, BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Sunday termed mockery the surrender of Yaba traders to police in Cox's Bazar.

"They (govt) have been talking about various steps to prevent drugs over the last 12 years, but failed to bring down drug addiction. The country has got ruined due to drug abuse. What you're seeing (in the name of surrender of Yaba traders) is a mockery," he said.

The BNP leader came up with the remarks while speaking at a discussion on women and children repression, arranged by BNP at the National Press Club in the city.

On Saturday, 102 Yaba traders, including 29 godfathers, as termed by the police, surrendered to Cox's Bazar police along with 3.5 lakh Yaba tablets and 30 firearms at Teknaf Pilot High School's playground.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal attended the surrender programme as the chief guest while Inspector General of Police Dr Javed Patwary was present as a special guest.

Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, said listed drug traders suddenly surrendered to police in presence of the Home Minister and the IGP.

"We would like to ask why police didn't arrest them earlier and put them on trial when they had the list of the drug traders. Now they (Yaba traders) are being implicated in cases in such a way so that they can come out of jail through the loopholes of the laws."

The BNP leader said police could not take action against those ruling party men involved in drug peddling.

He alleged that women and children are being subjected to continuous repression in the country though a female Prime Minister has been in power for over a decade.

Mosharraf said the country has been witnessing erosion in social and moral values for lack of democracy in the country. "To get rid of the current situation, we must restore democratic atmosphere in society and people's rights."

He urged the people of all walks of life to get united to free the country from the grasp of current 'autocratic' regime and restore democracy.

The BNP leader also bemoaned that a female Prime Minister is repressing' another former female Prime Minister in jail by unfairly convicting her in a 'false' case. "It won't be possible to restore democracy in the country without freeing Khaleda Zia."
