Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) students staged a protest march at midnight, rejecting the seven-point demand recently made by diploma engineers.
The protest began around 1:00 AM on Thursday from the BUET campus and ended with a brief rally at the base of the Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University.
The students also condemned the use of abusive language by the diploma engineers and asked them to apologise within 24 hours.
During the march, students chanted slogans mocking the diploma engineers' demands.
Syed Muhammad Mushfiq Alam, a Civil Engineering department student, said, "The seven demands made by diploma engineers are unreasonable. They are asking for quotas in all government grades. We have been saying that no one should be allowed into the ninth grade without a BSc degree, but the 10th grade should remain open to everyone on the basis of merit. Anyone qualified can secure a position through competition."
He further said, "Instead of that, diploma engineers are demanding 50 per cent promotion quota in the 10th grade, along with reserved positions," adding that the diploma engineers insulted the BSc graduates using abusive language on Wednesday.
"These unjust demands can never be accepted," he furthered.
