Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed on Tuesday inaugurated the renovated main building and courtroom of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in the capital.

This will handle cases filed over mass killings and crimes against humanity committed in July-August 2024.

The chief justice said the inauguration of the renovated main building and courtroom marks the beginning of a new era, aimed at conducting trials of the cases filed over the genocide and crimes against humanity that took place during last year's mass uprising.

In a written statement presented at the event, he further said this historic establishment carries the great legacy of the judicial history of this land.

He hoped the legacy would reach a new height by ensuring transparency, adherence to proper legal procedures, and pursuit of eternal principles of justice in the mass uprising case trials.

The chief justice further said his expectation from the ICT is the same as that of an ordinary citizen regarding the trials of mass killings and crimes against humanity committed to resist the mass uprising that was fuelled by the moral support of the entire nation.

Earlier, Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, chairman of the ICT, welcomed the chief justice at the main building of the tribunal.

Chief Prosecutor at the ICT Mohammad Tajul Islam and Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman attended the event, among others.
