Corruption key barrier to economic dev: ACC chief

FE Report | August 22, 2019 00:00:00

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Iqbal Mahmood on Wednesday said the Commission is giving more emphasis on business process reengineering to prevent corruption.

"The commission has formed 28 institutional teams to provide policy suggestions to different state bodies to bring methodical reform in government service delivery process by reducing bribery, graft, irregularities and public harassment," he said.

He said these at a meeting with a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) delegation to discuss the areas of mutual cooperation between respective organisations held at the ACC headquarters in the city.

The three-member UNDP delegation was led by its policy advisor Philliat Matsheza.

Mr Mahmood said the institutional teams monitor, analyse and scrutinise the existing laws, rules, operating system, misappropriation and misuse of government funds in different state organisations.

Taking into account different loopholes in the system, the teams identify limitations, legal barriers, reasons behind graft and other irregularities to place proper policy recommendations before the government and respective departments, he said.

Referring that theoretically corruption evolves with economic development, the ACC chairman said corruption is the key barrier to the country's growing economic development and the commission is working tirelessly to curb corruption.

He also said wrongdoers have been getting punished in 70 per cent of the cases lodged by the Commission though ACC expects cent per cent success rate.

Terming corruption a global crisis, Mr Matsheza said there are many scopes of mutual cooperation between UNDP and ACC to speed up preventive measures against graft acts.
