Court summons tax files of ex-minister Sadhan Chandra

January 24, 2025 00:00:00

A Dhaka court has summoned the income tax documents belonging to former food minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder, reports bdnews24.com.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order on Thursday, following a plea from the Anti-Corruption Commission, or ACC.

The anti-graft agency's Deputy Director Aminul Islam said Deputy Assistant Director Afnan Jannat Keya had sought the decision in a petition filed at the court.

The petition said Majumder owned Tk 253.4 million in assets beyond his known sources of income.

It also claimed that the former minister was involved in suspicious transactions amounting to Tk 430 million across 65 bank accounts, adding that the seizure of his income tax records is required for investigating the assets inconsistent with his known income.

Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina left the country for India on August 5, 2024, in the wake of a student-led mass movement, ending nearly 16 years of Awami League rule.

The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police then arrested Majumder in the capital's Bashundhara residential area on October 3.

He was elected from the Naogaon-1 constituency.
