Creating provocation now govt's real intent: BNP

'Intruders attacked police, not party men'

BNP on Wednesday alleged that the government is resorting to provocative acts to create an unstable situation in the country ahead of the court verdict to be delivered on February 8 in a graft case against its chairperson Khaleda Zia, reports UNB.

"Our top leaders are being arrested. The government is also issuing various threats and carrying out drives to arrest our leaders when a peaceful situation was prevailing. They (govt) themselves are destroying the stable political situation in the country," said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

He came up with the allegation while speaking at a press conference at BNP's Nayapaltan central office in the city.

The BNP leader alleged that the government is indulging in such acts to hold another lopsided election without the participation of BNP and other opposition political parties, and thus cement one-party rule.

"We think they're again trying to destabilise the country to keep opposition parties away from the polls. The government is making provocations to create an unstable situation so that BNP can't join the election," he observed.

Fakhrul alleged that the government's main target is now to create an uncertainty in politics over the verdict in a 'false' case filed against Khaleda Zia. "That's why they're now arresting our leaders and activists."

Mirza Fakhrul claimed that 'intruders', not BNP men, attacked police near the High Court during their chairperson's way back home on Tuesday.

"The photos of the incident which took place yesterday (Tuesday) in front of the High Court were published in newspapers. Even, we can't recognise those boys seen there. To be very frank, we fear intruders carried out the incident," Fakhrul said.

The BNP leader also alleged that the government may have involvement in the incident. "Though we've been carrying out our political activities and protest in a peaceful manner, the government is trying to create a chaos with an ulterior motive."

Eelier, police detained 69 BNP leaders and activists the same day as they allegedly attacked law enforcers and snatched two of their peers vandalising a prison van in front of the High Court in the afternoon.

Fakhrul demanded the government immediately release Gayeshwar, Amit and other their arrested party leaders.

He said Gayeshwar is not only a BNP standing committee member but also a 'political scientist' who has been in politics since his student life. "He's active in all democratic movements. He'd also a role in the Liberation War. It's an ominous sign the way he was suddenly arrested."
