Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Saturday that the democratic system must be brought back to the country through holding a free, fair and neutral election.
"There was no democratic system in the country during the last 15 years. Now time has come to give back democracy to the people of the country through holding a free, fair and neutral national election. There is no alternative to democracy and free, fair and neutral election," he said.
He made the comments while addressing as the chief guest an event marking the 19th founding anniversary of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital's Ramna area.
He said that the country was liberated through the War of Liberation just for expecting a Bangladesh free from exploitation.
He also said that a new dream has come again in the country people's mind for living in free Bangladesh (free from exploitation and inequality).
"There has been a big change in the country people's mindset after fallen autocratic ruler Sheikh Hasina fled the country. If we want to move Bangladesh forward, we must get united," he said.
He stressed giving back the country's ownership to the people.
"The country's people had no power during the last 15 to 16 years as the previous Awami League government had snatched away all rights of the people. Now time has come to give back ownership of the country to the people," he continued.
He said that people's ownership of the country could give back through allowing them to exercise their votes upon their will in a free, fair and neutral parliamentary poll.
"Sheikh Hasina has destroyed the country's institutions. She has also destroyed the country's building infrastructures and political infrastructures. We should be united to reform those infrastructures," he maintained.
Meanwhile, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir returned to the country after spending two weeks in Australia for visiting his family.
Mr Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir arrived at Hajrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital by a Singapore Airlines flight at 22:25 pm on Friday.
However, he did not talk much with the media after his arrival.
"The condition of the country is fine and will be finer InshaAllhah. I am fine. I will talk to you (media) later on. Thanks," he told the media while responding to a question about the country's present situation.
He went to Australia on October 11 to visit his daughter and her family.
