Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman urged on Monday voters, candidates and all student bodies to ensure a democratic atmosphere on the campus for holding Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) and Hall Union elections, slated for March 11, in a free, fair and peaceful manner.
DUCSU President and VC Akhtaruzzaman made the call at a meeting organised for the students and others concerned at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban Auditorium on the campus.
He said different active student organisations and general students are participating in the election. All election procedures including nomination papers' collection, submission and others have already been completed successfully.
"We are determined to hold the election in a free, fair, participatory, acceptable and peaceful manner." He also called for coexistence of all working student organisations on the campus.
DU Pro-VC (Academic) Prof Dr Nasreen Ahmad, Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Dr Muhammad Samad, Chief Returning Officer of DUCSU election Prof Dr SM Mahfuzur Rahman, candidates, voters, journalists and others were present at the programme.
Saying that the electoral code of conduct should be followed strictly, Dr Akhtaruzzaman expressed the hope that all the candidates would abide by the code of conduct.
He also said the administration of the varsity especially the proctor's team would remain vigilant to keep the situation on the university campus under control.
The law enforcement agencies were requested to help the proctor's team in maintaining law and order on the polling day and before and after elections, he added.
As per amended constitution of DUCSU, the election to 25 posts of DUCSU and 13 posts of each hall union will be held. Voting will start at 8:00 am and continue until 2:00 pm without any break.
