EC validates BNP nominee Farhana's candidacy for reserved seat

The Election Commission (EC) announced on Tuesday the nomination paper of BNP candidate Barrister Rumeen Farhana valid for the reserved seat for women in the 11th Jatiya Sangsad, reports BSS.

Talking to the news agency, Returning Officer Md Abul Kashem said after scrutinising her nomination paper, the EC on the day declared the paper of the BNP nominee valid.

He said if Farhana does not withdraw her candidacy, she would be elected unopposed on May 28 as she was the lone candidate for the reserved seat for women from BNP.

Farhana submitted her nomination paper to the EC on Monday, the last day of nomination papers submission.

Kashem said the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is May 28.

Of the 50 reserved seats, 49 candidates were elected unopposed in the 11th Jatiya Sangsad.

The reserved seats for women are allocated to the political parties in proportion with their number of seats in parliament.

In this way, 43 seats were allocated to Awami League, while four to Jatiya Party, one each to BNP, Jatiya Oikyafront, Workers' Party and independent candidates.
