Effigy of DSCC mayor burnt over 'failure' to contain dengue

FE REPORT | September 04, 2021 00:00:00

Residents of Old Dhaka on Friday burnt the effigy of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh over the DSCC's failure to contain the spread of dengue.

Demanding resignation of the mayor, they also condemned his foreign trip at a time when the people of Old Dhaka have been suffering a lot due to the spread of the mosquito-borne viral disease.

The effigy of the DSCC mayor was burnt in front of the National Press Club at a human-chain programme.

Speaking at the event, Saifullah Nabin, an artist and writer, said there have been no visible initiatives taken by the city corporation to prevent the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes which are responsible for spreading dengue.

Many people are getting infected with the viral disease while a number of children are dying from dengue fever but the city corporation is doing nothing to deal with the situation, he said.

"If the DSCC authority had sprayed insecticide in time on potential breeding ground of mosquito, there wouldn't have been that much death or infection," he added.

Another leader of the platform, Shahdat Hossain, said the dengue situation went out of control due to mismanagement of the DSCC authority which led to viral infection at every household in Old Dhaka.

"When the DSCC broke all the past records of dengue infection, its mayor went abroad on pleasure trip with his family, which is a matter of shame," he said.

After delivering speeches at the human chain, the participants in the programme burnt the effigy of the mayor and chanted slogan demanding his resignation.
