Election fever grips 13 Rajshahi municipalities

Polls likely in December

RAJSHAHI, Aug 29: Election fever grips 13 municipalities in Rajshahi district as an Election Commission (EC) meeting held on August 23 directed the EC secretariat to take measure for holding the elections at those municipalities in December this year.

The elections are likely to be held at the municipalities of Kakonhat and Godagari of Godagari upazila, Arani of Bagha upazila, Mundumal and Tanore of Tanore upazila, Kehorhat of Mohanpur upazila, Taherpur and Bhabaniganj of Bagmara upazila, Charghat, Durgapur, Puthia and Naohata of Paba upazila. The aspiring candidates of the municipalities have already started lobbying and making mass contact over the elections.

As the last elections of the municipalities were held on December 15, 2015, there is an obligation for EC to hold election to the municipalities within December this year.

The mayoral and councillor hopefuls from two main political parties have already started making contact with the party high-ups to make sure their tickets for their favour.

At the same time, they are holding meetings with grassroots level party workers and making contacts with the voters in their respective areas.

Meraju Uddin Molla, President of Rajshahi district unit of Awami League (AL), informed that aspiring candidates from AL have already been in the field and the acceptable candidates will be given nomination from the party.

Biswanath Sarker, Member Secretary of Rajshahi district unit of BNP, informed that the party high command would decide on whether the party will participate in the elections.

"However, the BNP leaders are in election mood and they are waiting for party decision.

Those are trying to get nominations are Monirul Islam Babu and Waez Uddin Biswas from AL of Godagari municipality while Anowarul Chodhruy and Golam Kibiria Runu from BNP, Abdul Mazid and Abndullhaid Kafi from AL and Ziaul Haque and Hafizur Rahman from Kakonhat, Imrul Haque and Abul Bashar from AL and Nijanur Rahman from BNP of Tanore municipality, Golam Mostafa, Saidur Rahman and Sharif Khan from AL and Mozammel Haque, Feroz Kabir and Ataur Rahman of BNP from Mundumala municipality, Abdul Bari Khan and Faisal Kabir from AL and Moqnbul Hossain, Wadud Hasn Pintu and Mamunur Sarker of BNP from Naohata Municipality, Abbas Ali of AL and Sirajul Islam and Nurul Islam of BNP from Kankakhlai municipality, AL candidates Shahiduzzaman, Rustom Ali and Shahinur and BNP candidate Alauddin Alo from Mohanpur municipality, AL candidates Abdul Malek and Mamunur Rahsid and BNP candidates Abdur Razzak and Shahinur Rahman from Bhawaniganj municipality, AL candidate Abul Kalam Azad and BNP candidate Abu Nayem Shamsur Rahman from Tharpur Municipality, Tofazzal Hossain, Abdul Mannan, Abdur Razzak and Azhar Ali of AL and Zarjis Sohel and Saidur Rahman Montu of BNP from Durgapur Municiplity, Rabiul Islam, Khaled Hossan, Habibur Rahman and Ibrahim Sarker from AL and Mamun Khan, Asadul Haque and Babul Hossain of BNP from Puthia Municipality, Ekramul Haque and Kazi Mahmudl Islam of AL and Zakirul Islam from BNP of Charghat Municipality, Akkas Ali, Masud Rana, Shahinur Rahman and Wahed Sadeque from AL while Abdur Razzak and Kamal Hossain of BNO from Bagha Municipality, Muktar Alui, Shahiduzzaman, Matiur Rahman and Ribon Ahmed of AL while Nazrul islam and Sujat Ahmed of BNP from Arani Municipality.
